881,531. Control systems for welding arcs. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. Nov. 12, 1959 [Nov. 21, 1958], No. 37492/58. Class 38 (4). [Also in Group XXII] A process of gas shielded arc welding consists in supplying a welding torch with shielding gas, after a delay connecting welding and ionising current to the electrode to strike an arc without contact occurring between the electrode and the work, switching off the ionising current, when the weld is completed switching off the welding current and after a delay stopping the supply of shielding gas. When a manual switch e.g. on a torch having a tungsten electrode, or on a cabinet housing the controlling and generating equipment is actuated a relay 47 connects up solenoid-operated valves 51, 52, 53 to supply argon and water to the torch and if desired argon to the back of the weld. After a delay the welding current from a source 58 is switched on by a relay 57 and a relay 65 responding to the open-circuit voltage connects up a high-frequency generator 67. When the arc strikes the relay 65 disconnects the high-frequency generator 67 and a D.C. motor drives a variable resistance 72 to gradually increase the welding current to the full welding value. When the manual switch is released at the end of the weld, the D.C. motor gradually alters the variable resistance 72 to decrease the current to a predetermined value at which it is switched off. Finally the gas and water are disconnected. If desired the automatic current control by the D.C. motor can be disconnected, the welding current being set manually.
