A buckle comprises a tongue part 14 for connection to one strap end 10, a connector part 13 for connection to the other strap end 11 and having two shells 18, 19, a pivot pin 20 pivotally connecting said shells adjacent one end for movement of one shell relatively to the other in order either to release or secure said tongue part in the connector part, and strap adjusted means disposed within the shells at the pivoted end having a sliding movement relatively to said pivot pin for releasing or gripping said other strap end between said adjusting means and said pivot pin. The buckle comprises, inside the shells 18, 19, separate, independent means for connecting the ends of the strap and for adjusting its effective length. Connection of the strap is effected by inserting tongue 14, attached to one end 10 of a strap, between the shells, an abutment 42 on a latch 21 co-operating with a hole 16 in the tongue to prevent outward movement of said tongue. The latch 21 is spring actuated, one or more springs being mounted on a pin 36 attached to the lower shell 18. Relative angular displacement of the shells 18 and 19 causes a pin 28 attached to the upper shell to move in a slot 29 in the lower shell and actuate a latch 21 to release the tongue 14. The effective length of the belt is altered by pushing a slide 46 into the shells by its nose 22 and moving the now loosened strap by the requisite amount. As soon as the slide moves out to the position shown in Fig. 2 the strap becomes firmly gripped around a collar 53 and a sleeve 45 on the pin 20.
