[Also in Groups XXII and XXXVII] To prevent crater formation at the termination of a weld on an automatic welding machine, as the end of the weld approaches the electrode advancing speed is reduced thus reducing the arc current subsequent to which the arc voltage is also reduced. In the embodiment described, the voltage from main transformers T1-T3 feeding the arc through rectifiers RX is supplemented by the voltage from booster transformers BT1-BT3 during the main run of the arc, but when the weld is being terminated, series resistors 1R-3R are unshunted to reduce the booster voltage.
