Class 40(7) [Also in Group XIX] A keying and recording apparatus comprises an endless belt carrying a keying stylus and a writing stylus which passes over a recording paper. A flexible non-conducting belt 51 passes round pulleys 45, 48, Figs. 4 and 10 (part shown), one of which is driven by a motor. The belt rides in grooves in a guide bar 46 and carries metal slippers in which are mounted the writing stylus 43 and the keying stylus 62, and which press against conducting rails 53, 54 during part of their travel. A non-conducting keying bar 63 has embedded in it two spaced contacts 69, 70. As the belt is driven the keying stylus touches these contacts and causes a circuit to be completed through the rail 54 and a selected contact 69 or 70; this keying action triggers a circuit which includes a sonic transmitter. The signals to be recorded, for example echoes in depth sounding, are fed as electrical signals to the rail 53 and pass to the writing stylus which marks the electro-sensitive recording paper. The spacing between the styli and the position of the contacts 69, 70 may be arranged so that received signals are recorded either directly after or at a predetermined time after the keying action. Thus in a depth sounder two depth ranges can be recorded. The belt may be driven at either of two speeds so that the recording scale is correspondingly magnified. Means are provided for adjusting the position of the keying bar and for adjusting the tension in the belt.
