[Class 118 (ii)] [See also Group XIX] A recorder for use in echo-sounding comprises a stylus traversed in one direction by an electromagnetic clutch and in the other by a spring or by gravity, one member of the clutch being driven by a constant speed motor which also drives a rotating contact system controlling the periods of energization of the clutch. The record may be made electro-chemically and the record strip be arranged as described in Specification 448,331. The recording point 18 is attached to a spring blade 19 on a carriage 20 guided on rods 21 and moved in one direction by a cord 23 and in the other by a return spring 25. The cord 23 is secured to a pulley 24 periodically clutched to a continuously-rotating shaft 28 by a magnetic clutch 27. The clutch is de-energized when an insulating segment 35 on a drum 34 secured to the shaft 28 comes under the brushes 36. The clutch circuit is also connected to a drum 39 having a conducting segment 42, the drum being driven at onequarter the speed of the shaft 28. Six equallyspaced contacts 43 coact with the segment 42 and a selected one is placed in the clutch circuit by a switch 44. The sound emitter is controlled by a switch (not shown), on the shaft of the drum 39. The setting of the switch 44 determines the time which elapses between the emitting of the sound and the energization of the clutch 27 to give the recorder its operative stroke. The position of the datum line is thus varied. The scale of the record can be altered by a speed-change gear 29.
