Abstract

878,215. Light refracting plates. HOLOPHANE Ltd. Dec. 4, 1957 [Dec. 10, 1956], No. 37680/56. Drawings to Specification. Class 75(2). A light transmitting and refracting plate is provided on the exit surface with a light controlling configuration acting in all azimuths by providing on that surface separate contiguous or nearly contiguous recesses having their surfaces at a slope approximately equal 2 to - (90 degrees-C) where y is an odd integer y greater than 1 and C is the critical angle of the material. The depressions may be conical and arranged with their centres at the apices of equilateral triangles, the base circles being contiguous, overlapping or spaced apart to leave small flat areas in between. Other regular or irregular arrangements of the depressions may be used. Alternatively the depressions may be in the form of square based pyramids or triangular based pyramids. The conical depressions may be produced by moulding a plastic such as methyl methacrylate or by moulding transparent resin or glass using a die plate with conical projections. The pyramidal depressions are formed by moulding using a die plate machined by cutting intersecting sets of parallel V-section grooves, which may be spaced apart to leave narrow flats between zones of any of the sets. The sizes of the depressions may be varied in different parts of the plate. Specification 619,084 is referred to.
