Abstract

851,217. Die for moulding synthetic resin panels. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. April 29, 1958 [Mav 21, 1957], No. 16121/57. Class 87(2). [Also in Groups X, XV, XXII and XXIII] A body having a surface figured by a multiplicity of parallel rows of outwardly tapering projections is produced by forming three mutually transverse and intersecting sets of prismatic grooves in the surface, the grooves in each set being parallel to each other and the apex lines of any one set of grooves being spaced from the points of intersection of the apex lines of the other two sets. The grooves may be all similar and the three sets inclined at equal angles to each other and relatively spaced to provide major projections of symmetrical polygonal shape in cross-sections parallel to the surface. The sides of the grooves may be plane and disposed to produce major projections of hexagonal cross-section as shown in Fig. 1, or the sides of the grooves may be curved. The body may be of steel to produce a die for moulding glass or polymerised methyl methacrylate for use in lighting fittings, the panels produced having pyramidal recesses. Panels having pyramidal projections may be produced either directly by cutting the grooves thereon or by moulding using a die having pyramidal recesses derived from the first produced body by known technique. The grooves may be spaced to produce truncated projections.
