Abstract

A hydrocarbon liquid consisting of or derived from a petroleum distillate is treated with oxygen as such or in the form of air at a temperature of 175-400 DEG C., the oxygen-treated hydrocarbon liquid is coked on a petroleum coke carrier in a rotary kiln at a temperature of 1100-1400 DEG C., and a portion of the product coke is recycled as carrier. The product coke may be converted into moderator graphite. The oxygen-treated hydrocarbon liquid may have a pour point of at least 50 DEG C., preferably at least 65 DEG C. The oxygen-treated hydrocarbon liquid may be applied to the carrier inside or outside the kiln. Fine particle size coke is preferably recycled.
