A sanitary closet comprises a tank 1 for liquid disinfectant, a pan 4, two footpads, such as at 6, mounted on the tank 1 in the neighbourhood of the pan 4, a manuallyoperable lift pump having a plunger 12 movable in a barrel 15, opening into and in the tank 1, with a filter screen 10 around it, and having valve means, e.g. an apertured plate 14 and an obturator plate 16, allowing liquid to pass it on the downstroke but not on the upstroke and withdrawing liquid from the tank 1 to flush the pan 4 as well as simultaneously drawing liquid through the screen 10 into the barrel 15, and an outlet 22 having a plug closure 11 which, when normally-seated against it, permits liquid to overflow from the tank 1 through the outlet 22 by means of associated holes 23. An agitator 18, connected to the plunger 12 of the pump, is moved thereby. The tank 1 has an outwardly-extending flange 2 at the top to which is secured a casting 3 mounted over the tank 1, in which the footpads are formed or to which they are secured. The plug 11 has flanges 24 and is sealed tightly in the outlet 22 by means of a gasket 25.
