Abstract

876,757. Packages. HEDLEY & CO. Ltd., THOMAS. March 3, 1960 [March 11, 1959], No. 7620/60. Class 94(1). A package includes a relatively stiff liner member and a superposed flexible outer wrapper, said liner member having one end terminating in an opening tab, the liner member and the outer wrapper being wrapped round an article so that the opening tab is interposed between the corresponding end of the outer wrapper on the outside of the package and an inner layer of the outer wrapper beneath the opening tab, the end of the opening tab protruding, whereby it can be pulled so as to tear the outer wrapper and open the package. The liner blank 15 is divided into panels by score lines 21, 22, 23, 24, 29, 30, 31, 32, Fig. 4, and tabs 39 are cut near the score lines 21, at a distance about equal to the thickness of the blank. The composite wrapper is folded about the article, e.g. a bar of soap 40. Fig. 6 shows a stage in the folding operation, when the panel 20 is folded into place it is prevented by the tabs 39, Fig. 10, from bending inwards, whereby a rectangular structure is assured. The tear tab panel 16 is folded along the score line 21 and interposed between the inner and outer layers 45, 38 of the outer wrapper, leaving the tab 37 protruding. The wrapper may then be torn open by pulling back the tab. The outer wrapper may have perforations 46, Fig. 2, to facilitate tearing, or may be shaped, Fig. 3, to conform to the end of the liner blank, the edges 49, 50 overlapping the edges 33, 34 of the blank, to which they are heat-sealed. The relative sizes of the panels may be varied and some, e.g. the end panels 25, 26, 27, 28 may be omitted. The score lines may be omitted, the liner blank then being of relatively soft, though reasonably stiff, material. Less than all the surfaces of the article, even one only, may be covered by the liner blank, this necessitating the blank being adhesively secured to the wrapper.
