876,217. Fluid-pressure servomotor-control systems. WESTINGHOUSE BREMSENG.m.b.H. Sept. 9, 1959 [Sept. 9, 1958], No. 30745/59. Class 135. A fluid-pressure operated positional actuator for a fuel injection pump 29 comprises a control piston 7 movable by pressure via a variable setting valve 3 against the action of a spring 23, a positioning piston 11, and a self-lapping valve device 12 operable in dependence upon the position of the control piston relative to the piston 11 to supply fluid pressure to, or vent, a pressure chamber 19 so as to maintain the position of the latter piston in accordance with the control piston, the control piston and the positioning piston being coupled together by a lost-motion device 7a, 11a. The piston 11 is provided with a hollow extension 7c cooperating with the valve 12. In operation, pressurized fluid, such as air, passes from a reservoir 1, through a pipe 9 into a chamber 10 and maintains the piston 11 in the position shown, the valve 12 seating on the latter piston. When the variable-setting valve 3 is operated, air passes through a pipe 4 to act on the control piston 7 moving it, together with the piston 11 until the pressure acting on the piston 7 is balanced by the spring 23; during this movement, the end of the extension 7c lifts the valve 12 from its seat and thereby allows pressure fluid from the chamber 10 to pass via a port 18, into the chamber 19 and move the piston 11 to the right until the valve 12 again seats on the latter piston and a pressure balance is obtained in chambers 10, 19, the valve 12 lapping the end of the hollow extension 7c which communicates with atmosphere through ports 20, 22. In the event of variation in load on the piston 11 from the injection pump 29 via links 14, 16, 27, 28, the valve 12 is either lifted off its seat thereby admitting more air into the chamber 19 or, air is leaked off from the latter chamber to atmosphere. A manually-operated control 25, 26 is provided for actuating the injection pump if the pressure system fails.
