Abstract

875,246. Radiography apparatus. TRAVIS, R. K. June 15, 1959, No. 20477/59. Class 98(1) An apparatus for skull radiography has a skull-receiving tray mounted on a base-plate so as to pivot about an axis parallel therewith, an aligner rod overlying said tray and connected therewith so as to swing with it about said axis, and a second aligner rod also pivoted on the base-plate to move about an axis normal to said tray axis. The tray 17, which has secured therein a shaped mass of soft material for receiving the patient's head, is mounted by a pin 18 on a post 19 fixed to the base-plate 4. The tray can rotate on this pin about an axis parallel to the base-plate. Attached to the tray is a pointer 20 reading against a fixed scale 21, to indicate the degree of angular displacement of the tray. Temporarily secured to the tray so as to rotate with it is a rod 24 having a right-angled portion 26 extending parallel to the tray axis. This can subsequently be swung away from its position overlying the tray. At one or both sides of the tray is a side aligner rod 48 mounted on a plate 38 slidably mounted on the base-plate 4 so that it can slide towards or away from the tray. The rod 48 can pivot about a pin 50, the degree of rotation being shown on a scale 53. The base-plate 4 is secured on a supporting table 1, and below this table the photographic cassette 3 is inserted in a holder 2. In operation, the patient's head is positioned in tray 17, a mould being used which locates the Sella Turcica opposite the pivot point 18 of aligner rod 24, which rod aligns the forehead, nose, and chin of the patient with the centre line of the table. The tray 17 is now revolved to the desired tangential angle of view required, this angle being shown on scale 21. The side aligning rod 48 is now set at the required angle, as shown by pointer 52 on scale 53, and the X-ray tube aligned with pointer 52. Then the cassette is inserted in its holder 2, the graduations on a scale 58 (see Fig. 7, not shown) serving to align the cassette in the proper position with regard to the angle of incidence of the X-rays. The rod 24 is moved out of the way, and the radiograph made. For a side radiograph, the cassette may be supported in a vertical position as indicated at the left-hand side of Fig. 1.
