1345177 X-ray apparatus M MOSS 19 April 1971 [27 April 1970] 26926/71 Heading H5R Apparatus suitable for taking panoramic, intra-oral occlusal and cephalometric radiographs of the head, jawbone, and teeth includes an X-ray source and a film holder coupled to one another for rotation about a patient positioned therebetween, and interchangeable means permitting movement, with respect to the patient, of the pivot point of the rotation. The radiographic apparatus is mounted on, and is vertically adjustable with respect to, an upright column 14 by means of a counterweighted support member 22, to which a hinged arm 26 supporting a head positioner 24 and an adjustable cassette holder 36 is also attached, the column 14 being itself horizontally adjustable along a base 12 by use of a control lever 41. The rotatable anode X-ray tube 16 and film holder 18 are mounted at opposite ends of a member 54 which also carries a motor 51 which, by driving a friction wheel 78 resting on a centrally apertured platform 50, can cause member 54 to rotate upon the platform. The member 54 has a pair of arms 58, 58<SP>1</SP>, the axis of rotation of member 54 being determined by the engagement of a cam follower pin or pins secured to a bracket 60 with apertures in a cam plate 52 mounted on platform 50 to extend over its central aperture. Both bracket 60 and plate 52 are readily detachable whereby, by use of differently pinned and apertured replacements, a desired axis of rotation may be achieved; further, by use of suitably shaped apertures in plate 52 (Fig. 5c, not shown), movement of the axis during rotation may be produced. For the taking of panoramic radiographs of a patient's head, the X-ray tube is locked in a position facing the film holder, which latter is additionally rotated about its axis in synchronism with the rotation of member 54. A changing axis of rotation may be produced either by use of a suitable cam plate 52, in which case the patient's head is secured in a central head positioner 98, or by operation of lever 41. For intra-oral radiography, nut 132 is loosened to permit the X-ray tube to rotate about its axis 134, a collimator 130 is coupled to the tube, and the film is positioned within the patient's mouth. For cephalometric radiography, the patient's head is held in the head positioner 24 and the film in cassette holder 36, towards which the collimated X-ray beam is directed. Hinge 27 in arm 26 enables positioner 24 and holder 36 to be swung out of the way, to permit X-raying of the chest.
