Abstract

Polyethylene is modified with minor amounts of other materials, e.g. 1% or 2% of polyisobutylene or butyl rubber to improve stretching characteristics, 1% or 2% of hydrocarbon waxes such as paraffin wax or stearates such as calcium and butyl stearates to serve as lubricants in the forming operation, and fillers such as 10% calcium carbonate, 1% titanium dioxide or 15% calcium carbonate to improve stretching characteristics without substantially impairing the breaking point. The oxidation of polyethylene surfaces using hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a detergent such as an alkyl sulphonate and optionally an accelerating agent is also described. The compositions may be formed into tubes, squeezable bottles or containers.
