Abstract

874,604. Hydraulic torque converters. CALOW, T., [trading as CALOW & CO., TH.]. Sept. 9, 1959 [Sept. 11, 1958], No. 30758/59. Class 69 (2). The working conditions of a vaned torque converter are varied by at least two control means which are associated with at least one of the bladings of the converter and are adjustable independently of one another for varying the flow conditions in the converter. In a torque converter which is used in the drive to a machine tool and has pump vanes 3 driven from a shaft 2, turbine vanes 5 connected to an output shaft 4, and guide vanes 9 mounted to be pivotally adjusted by gearing 10, 11, the flow conditions at the trailing edges of the vanes are varied by the supply of a medium, which may be the same as, or different from, the medium in the working circuit and at a lower temperature, through pipes 12, 13, 14 to outlets 15, 16, 17 in the turbine, pump and guide vanes respectively. The flow conditions may also be varied at the trailing edges of the guide vanes by the supply of a medium through a shaped orifice 18 which can be rotated to vary the effect on the vanes. In other arrangements, the flow at the trailing edges of the vanes is varied by adjustment of a flap 26, Fig. 7, pivoted to the vane or at a point downstream of the vane, by a comb-like member which is freely pivoted and arranged to be held in operative position by an electromagnet, or by having orifices in the trailing edges connected to a suction device. The working space of the converter is connected by passages 20 to a storage space 22 so that, if the medium supplied to the trailing edges is air, it can pass out of the converter through a gap between the storage space and a cover 23. In a further embodiment, the pump vanes are mounted for pivotal movement and are adjustable by a piston-and-cylinder device controlling the axial movement of a helical gear engaging gears secured to the vanes.
