873,986. Vertically adjustable resiliently mounted seats. BREMSHEY, F. and FULLING, W., [trading as BREMSHEY & CO.]. May 24, 1960 [June 22, 1959], No. 18302/60. Classes 52(1) and 52(2). In a vehicle seat resiliently mounted by means of a hollow piston 10 movable in a vertical cylinder 11 fixed to the vehicle floor and containing liquid to the level 23 above which is an air filled space 24, the cylinder 11 is connected by a pipe to a pump having a by-pass valve by means of which the volume of liquid in the cylinder can be altered to adjust the height of the seat. Wall 26 closing the bottom end of the piston has throttled openings 27, for the passage of liquid, which are closed by a valve plate 38 loaded by a spring 37 when the piston moves upwards and a passage 39 however remains open so that the movement of the piston is braked. To reduce heavy shocks when the piston is in its lowered position a pin 45 is provided on end wall 26 opposite an opening 46, the pin being tapered having a groove 47 or of slightly smaller diameter than the opening so that the liquid can only flow out against a strong throttling resistance. The bars 21 supporting the levers 17, 19 of the seat supporting arm are pivoted to a ring 33 rotatable about the axis of the piston and by means of a catch 35 loaded by a spring 34 engageable with notches 36 in the foot of cylinder 10 the seat may be fixed in any of a number of predetermined positions.
