A washing machine comprises an opentopped washing tank 10 disposed within and communicating at its base with a balance tank 15, and means for introducing gas or vapour above the liquid in the balance tank so that quantities of gas or vapour are periodically discharged from the balance tank into the washing tank to agitate liquid and articles therein. In Fig. 1, an air inlet 18 controlled by a valve 19 is connected to a blower 20 which draws air through a pipe 21 to produce a circulation of cooling air in the space between the tank 15 and an outer casing 17. The machine also includes a removable perforated plate 13, an electric heater 25 and thermostat 26. By means of a lid 22 the tank 10 can be sealed and the blower 20 used to empty the machine through a pipe 24. In Fig. 2 steam is used instead of air under pressure, the steam being generated in a looped section 27 of a tube having an inlet 29 and outlet 34. The section 27 is heated by a burner 31 controlled by a thermostat 32. The machine can be used as a wash boiler by opening a valve 35, thereby stopping the rhythmic movement of water between the tanks 10, 15.
