Class 64(1) A steamheated immersion heater for water and other liquids comprises a chamber 1 provided with an inlet 5 for steam under pressure, means for directing cooling water i n t o contact with the steam in the chamber 1, and a steam outlet remote from the inlet and consisting of a plurality of small apertures 14. The volume of the chamber is such as to allow the steam to expand and so become superheated, and the amount 'of cooling water reaching the steam is such as to reduce or eliminate the superheat, so that the steam entering the liquid to be heated is saturated steam. Steam from a constricted inlet 5 flows through a cylindrical chamber 1 projecting into a tank containing the liquid to be heated, and draws liquid through openings 13 near the top of a central pipe 11 open at the bottom to the liquid in the tank. The steam passes from the chamber 1 into the main body of liquid through slots 14 in the corrugated lower part of the cylindrical wall of the chamber 1. When the liquid has reached a temperature of say 140‹F, liquid is supplied under manual or thermostatic control from an external source through a pipe 10 and an annular recess in the cover plate 4. In a modification the lower part of the cylindrical wall instead of being corrugated is provided on the inside with vertical channels closed at the top and open at the bottom to liquid in the tank.
