A fastening device for releasably connecting a strap or webbing to an anchorage comprises a T-shaped element 10 formed with a wide foreshortened body 16 and arm portions 13, 13<SP>1</SP> extending therefrom and having a slot 11 extending across the element for receiving the strap or webbing with the latter forming a bight around the body and an anchor member 15 having a slot 18 therein of width to pass the thickness of the element 10 when it has a strap or webbing 12 therearound and of length greater than the width of the body of the element but less than the width of the element across the arm portions, such that the element with the strap or webbing therearound can be passed through the slot 18 if the element is orientated so that the direction of width of the element across the arm portions is oblique to the direction of the length of the anchor member slot, but can thereafter be locked against withdrawal through the latter under tension on the strap or webbing by moving the element so that the direction of width of the element across the arm portions becomes parallel to the direction of length of the anchor member slot and the arm portions of the element engage the anchor member at each end of the slot in the latter. The anchor member may have lips along the sides of its slot 18 to restrict swinging movement of the element 10.
