In a butterfly valve comprising a butterfly closure member mounted in a valve body for rotation about an axis inclined to the plane of a radially expansible seating ring mounted in a valve body recess for engagement with the periphery of the closure member in the closed position of the valve, the closure member which comprises a cylindrical boss 2 fixed to an operating shaft 3 and an integral circular valve plate 1 with a part-spherical sealing edge, angularly disposed in relation to the axis of the shaft, is transversely movable in the valve body by rotation of a lever 10 to move a screwthreaded rod 8 into and out of abutting relationship with the end of the shaft 3. On moving the rod away from the shaft when the valve is closed, the closure member and shaft are moved bodily towards the rod by a component of the fluid pressure acting on the upstream side X of the valve plate and owing to the floating nature of the seating ring 3 and the angle between the shaft axis and the valve plate the valve plate moves into tightsealing engagement with the seating ring. To open the valve the rod 8 is moved into abutment with the shaft 3 so that the centre of the valve plate 1 is moved to coincide with the centre of the ring 3. The lever 10 and rod 8 may be replaced by a fluid-operated ram or the shaft 3 may be screw-threaded so that on rotation of the single lever 7 the closure member is moved transversely besides being rotated.
