Paper pulp supplied from a flow-box 15 to the wire-cloth 10 above an open breast roll 11 of a Fourdrinier paper-making machine is subjected to suction through the roll 11 and wire 10, the roll 11 being partly surrounded by a suction save-all enclosure 18; the wire 10, at its entry into the enclosure passing through an adjustable gap G which acts as a partial vacuum seal. The wire 10 leaving the roll 11 passes between side seals 23 and above an adjustable deflector 21 for removing water from beneath the wire-cloth, a further deflector 27 being provided adjacent a table roll 12. In modifications, the gap G may have corrugated surfaces on each side; or the gap may be on one side of a wire-guide roll adjoining which is a doctor with a sealing tube; or the gap G may be formed as a water seal. In other modifications, there is a succession of suction zones with table rolls 12 and deflectors 27 extending along the underside of the wirecloth.
