822,187. Steering vehicles. MASCHINENFABRIK AUGSBERG-NURNBERG A.G. June 6, 1956 [July 28, 1955], No. 17448/56. Class 79(5) In a motor driven crane steered from a steerable cab 1 either by a hand operated mechanical mechanism or by a power operated mechanism the control linkage for the power operated mechanism passes through the steering journal of the cab 1 and the steering column of the handoperated mechanism inclines forwardly from the cab 1 to a worm gear 4, the column being formed into two parts connected to the cab 1 and the main frame 7 and interconnected when the cab 1 is in its normal travelling position. As further shown the steering column includes a removable portion 3 serving to prevent rotation of the cab 1 relative to the frame 7. In order to provide vehicle steering when the cab 1 has been rotated on the frame 7 from the position shown in Fig. 1, a hand lever 8 controlling the power steering is provided to operate a pneumatic transformer 9 which comprises a compressed air container and a control valve and which drives rotary motors 10, 11. The motor 10 is connected by a link 13 to the drop arm 6 of the gear 4, and the motor 11 is connected by a link 12 to steerably deflect the wheels on the rear axle 14. A valve 15 is provided to reverse the connections between the transformer 9 and motor 11, whereby the rear wheels can be rotated in the same or opposite direction to the front wheels. By closing one of the supply conduits from the source 9 only one pair of wheels may be deflected.
