Abstract
Highly crystalline polyolefins are prepared by polymerizing an olefin (particularly ethylene, but propylene is also mentioned) in presence of hydrogen and a catalyst which is prepared by mixing (a) a Group IVa, Va, VIa or VIII metal halide, e.g. TiCl4, with at least 1,7 molar proportion of (b) an organo-aluminium compound, the resulting catalyst admixture being maintained at between 60 DEG C. and 100 DEG C. for between 10 and 60 minutes. Component (b) preferably has the formula R3Al or R2AlX, R being a hydrocarbon radical and X being halogen, H, alkoxy, aryloxy or the residue of a secondary amine or an amide, mercaptan, thiophenyl, carboxylic or sulphonic acid; the examples specify Et2AlCl, while Et3Al and i,Bu3Al are also mentioned. Specifications 799,392, 799,823, 801,031, 810,023, 851,112 and 851,113 are referred to.ALSO:A polymerization catalyst is prepared by mixing (a) a Group IVa, Va, VIa or VIII metal halide, e.g. TiCl4, with at least 1.7 molar proportions of (b) an organo-aluminium compound, the resulting admixture being maintained at between 60 and 100 DEG C. for between 10 and 60 minutes. Component (b) preferably is of the formula R3Alx or R2AlX, wherein R is a hydrocarbon radical, e.g. an aliphatic radical having up to 20 carbon atoms, and X is halogen (e.g. Cl), H, alkoxy, aryloxy or the residue of a secondary amine or an amide, mercaptan, thiophenol, carboxylic or sulphonic acid; the examples specify Et2AlCl, while Et3Al and i-bu3Al are also mentioned.
