Abstract

Olefinic hydrocarbons are polymerized by feeding the hydrocarbon to a reaction medium comprising a dispersion of a Ziegler catalyst in a solvent and a minor proportion of a polyalkylene glycol or an ether or ester thereof. In a modification, the polyalkylene glycol, or ether or ester thereof, may be applied to the internal walls of the polymerization reactor. The polymerization process may be effected continuously. The Ziegler catalyst is of the kind described in Specifications 799,392, 799,823, 801,031, and 867,566. The polyalkylene glycol, when mixed with the reaction medium, has, preferably, a molecular weight within the range of 300 to 600, whilst that of the glycol used for coating the internal walls of the reactor is generally of molecular weight of the order 20,000 to 4,000,000. The olefinic hydrocarbon may be ethylene and/or propylene. In the examples, the Ziegler catalyst used is a mixture of titanium tetrachloride and aluminium diethyl monochloride. The polyalkylene glycol or derivative thereof is stated to prevent the formation of deposits on the walls of the reactor, and also assists in the purification of the polymer.
