869,177. Chucks; indexing. BERTHOLD, L. Oct. 30, 1959 [Nov. 5, 1958], No. 36872/59. Class 83 (3). An indexing device incorporated in a lathe chuck comprises an indexing pin and a number of hydraulic piston and cylinder devices disposed at relative angles which are fractions of the total indexing angle the pistons being brought to bear in succession on the pin to effect indexing. When applied to a lathe chuck 1, Fig. 1, for indexing work 4 about a transverse axis without stopping the chuck rotation, one chuck jaw 15 is secured to the indexing pin 5 which is rotatable in the chuck body by means of the bevelled ends 10a, 11a, Fig. 2, of a pair of hydraulic pistons arranged at forty-five degrees. The pistons operate successively on a squared portion 5a, 5b of the indexing pin 5, each piston moving the pin through forty-five degrees. The second piston 11 remains in its extended position to clamp the pin during turning. The opposite jaw 14, Fig. 1, of the chuck is rotatable within a piston 12 which is used to clamp the work.
