Abstract

1,119,279. Extrusion coating. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 4 Oct., 1966, No. 44325/66. Headng B5N. An extrusion, coating process comprises extruding a random copolymer of ethylene and 3 to 20% by-weight of a C 3-7 unsaturated carboxylic acid in the form of a heat plastified film and depositing said film on a substrate and cooling the applied copolymer layer to solidify the film on the substrate, the substrate being heated to 80 to 250‹ C. before and/or after this process. The substrate may be metal, e.g. aluminium or steel, paper, paperboard, corrugated paper, wood, leather, fabric, cellulose resins, glass, foam or plastics. The copolymer is suitably extruded at 105 to 250‹ C. A suitable apparatus for carrying out this process comprises a supply 2 of substrate 1, which passes over heating rolls 3 and 4 to nip rolls 9 and 10, where the copolymer film 8 is extruded from the die 7 of an extruder 5 on to the substrate. The laminate is compressed by rolls 9 and 10, roll 10 suitably having a surface of polytetrafluoroethylene, and passes over rolls 12 and 13. These may both be chill rolls, or the laminate may be cooled by roll 12 and then heated by roll 13, if heating of the product after coating is required.
