A towing assembly for tugs comprises a forked arm 2, Fig. 2, on one end of which is pivoted a hollow circular hook member 3 recessed to provide a hook part 8 and held in raised position by a pawl 24 engaging a notch 25. The pawl is on a lever 23 pivoted at 26 and held by a pin 27 connected to a release lever 4. On pivoting the lever 4 in the direction of arrow 5, lever 23 drops and the hawser 7 is released causing rotation of the hook member which has balancing holes 10 ... 12. Brake bands 19, 20, Fig. 3, extending around wheels 17, 18 on the axle 1 of the hook member are tensioned by springs 21, 22 as the lever 4 is turned, and slow down the rotating hook member. In a modification, the pawl 31, Fig. 4, is pivoted at 32 and is held by a weighted lever 33 pivoted at 34. To release, the lever 33 is pivoted in the direction of arrow 35 and the pawl drops against a stop 37. The hook member which rotates on its axle is braked by spring pressed discs 40 within the forked arm 2. In both cases, the arm is pivoted, as at 45, to a part of the ship, and means, e.g. a spring 43, is provided to support the arm as it drops, e.g. on releasing the hawser.
