Abstract

712,537. Disc brakes. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., and BUTLER, H. J. Nov. 5, 1952 [Nov. 16, 1951; Jan. 11, 1952], Nos. 26851/51 and 855/52. Class 103(1) A disc brake, particularly for motor vehicles, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, comprises a torque plate 4 secured by-bolts 4a to a non-rotatable part of the wheel 3 and having a pair of radially extending arms 5 between the ends of which extends a beam member 8 forming a mounting for two friction pads 9. The ends of arms 5 are also secured by axially extending rods 10, which pass adjacent the periphery of the friction disc 1, to a reaction member 11. The member 11 carries a pair of fluid pressure operated pistons and friction pads 14 and 17 so that when pressure is applied the disc is gripped by force applied to the pads 17 and the reaction on member 11 'is transmitted through rods 10 to the member 8 and pads 9. Figs. 8 and 6 show a similar arrangement but the braking force may be applied either by an inflatable sac actuator 39 or mechanically by tension in cable 43 pulling back the reaction member 30 to which the lugs 41 are pivoted and through studs 29 the pressure member 26 at the same time exerting a force on plate 34 through studs 36. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 7. the reaction member 48 is secured to the non-rotatable wheel part at its lower end by a pin 53 passing through a spherically shaped bush 52, as shown in Fig. 8, and at its upper end by a link 57 between pins 58 and 59 also having spherically shaped bushes 54 and 58. The use of such'bushes permits tilting of the pad holding members in planes parallel to, or normal to, the plane of the brake disc. Automatic wear adjustment means as described in Specification 631,877 may be fitted.
