A booster for maintaining or promoting combustion of solid fuels in a domestic fire including a firefront having at least one air inlet vent, comprises a casing adapted to form with the firefront a pressure chamber into which the firefront opens, an opening in the casing and a fan secured to the casing and arranged to force or draw air through the opening to the pressure chamber. As shown, Fig. 2, a casing 11 encloses a firefront 12 with adjustable apertures (not shown) and has an integral extension 14 housing an electric motor 15 and a fan 16. When pressure rises in the chamber formed by the casing 11 and firefront 12, air is forced through the apertures in the firefront 12. Control means for the motor may comprise a variable series resistance or a thermostat. In an alterative embodiment, Fig. 3, a casing 21 encloses a front 22, 26, apertures 27 in the portion 26 each having a flap valve 30, which is forced open by increase in pressure in the chamber enclosed by the casing 21 and front 22, 26. The size of the apertures 27 may be varied by moving an apertured plate (not shown) slidably mounted on the portion 26.
