867,249. Heat treating. GREENE, B. Nov. 9, 1959 [Nov. 10, 1958], No. 36101/58. Class 72 [Also in Group XII] A heat treatment chamber comprises a water-jacketed cylinder 10 defining with a partition 18 a treatment chamber 16 connected in a closed gaseous circulation system incorporating a cooler 27, a valvecontrolled connection to a vacuum pump 30, a pump 28, and a valve 29 controlling the gas supply to a pipe 17 in the lower segment of the cylinder. The heating chamber has a refractory lining 11 spaced 3 ins. from the water jacket and is closed by a door 19 forming a gas-tight seal. The pipe 17 terminates near the door and a connection to the chamber 16 completes the cooling gas circuit. Atmosphere gas, e.g. hydrogen, supplied from cylinders 32 passes through a purifying chamber 35, drying chamber 36, reservoir 37 and compressor 39 to enter the gaseous circuit under control of valve 40. The furnace may be thus operated either under vacuum or under pressure with an atmosphere of hydrogen.
