Abstract
866,213. Photo-electric detection of spacing faults. POWELL, G. F. W., CROSLAND, R. G., and MOLINS MACHINE CO. Ltd. Jan. 27, 1958 [Jan. 25, 1957], No. 2754/57. Class 40(3) In apparatus for detecting spacing faults in a succession of workpieces, e.g. composite cigarette rods, moving in spaced relationship, a photoelectric detector 1, Fig. 4A, produces a voltage pulse when the trailing edge of a workpiece moves out of the light beam illuminating its cell and a second photo-electric detector 2 allows the passage of the pulse to maintain a control circuit keeping the moving mechanism in operation only if the light directed on its cell is obscured by the leading edge of a following workpiece. The voltage pulse produced by cell 12, Fig. 3A, of detector 1 passes via transformer 14 to the voltage dividing circuit, resistance 15 and cell 16 of detector 2. If cell 16 is obscured its resistance is high and the pulse amplitude exceeds the bias on diode 17 whereby the pulse passes via conductor O to the control circuit. When, due to a spacing fault, cell 16 is not obscured the pulse amplitude is insufficient to exceed the diode bias and the absence of a pulse on conductor O switches off the moving mechanism.
