Abstract

866,153. Making cartons. ST. REGIS PAPER CO. April 14, 1959 [May 19, 1958], No. 12662/59. Class 18. A semi-rigid case of kraft paper, Fig. 15, is formed from a roll of flat paper by forming the paper into a tube and securing the edges by adhesive, the corner lines being scored by rolls to facilitate erection of the case, and the tube subsequently cut into lengths correspond to the length of case required. The corner lines may be strengthened by reinforcing strips stuck to the web of paper. A tear strip 45a having a slit 100 to facilitate opening may be provided. The kraft paper on a roll 21 passes to a printing station 23 and then to an adhesive application station 36 where reinforcing strips from rolls 26-29 are affixed. A thermo-plastic adhesive applied in two parallel ribbons, may be used. The scores are formed by various rolls, one form being shown in Fig .13, the crests of the scores may be further deformed. Alternatively, the web may be creased by a creasing blade 65, Fig. 8, and passed between rolls to press the part 68 on to the part 22. Cutters 92-95 form the end flaps 87-90 by slitting the tube at its corners 91 and are mounted on a shaft 102 carrying the cutter 101 that cuts the slit 100 in the tear strip. Fingers 101a remove scrap portions cut out of the web slots. The tube is formed at 48 and subsequently passes to draw rolls 103, a cutter 108 severs the tube to the length of case required, and at 110 and 116 creasing means are provided for forming the crevices between the case and its end flaps.
