Abstract

A milk substitute for young animals so prepared by mixing water soluble, partially or completely hydrolysed proteins with fats and mono- or disaccharides and milling the mixture obtained, in paste form, so that the fat is emulsified and a particle size of solid or insoluble components of under 30 microns, preferably in the range 5-30 microns is obtained; the mixture may be dried to a powder. The protein hydrolysates may be obtained from soya bean, peanut, sunflower seed and cotton seed fat-free meals, blood, fish and meat meals, or the residue from the manufacture of glutamic acid; the fat employed may be beef suet; the mono- or disaccharides are exemplified by glucose, lactose, starch hydrolysation products, enzymatically degraded maize or oat meal or malt extract. Vitamins, antibiotics, mineral salts, lecithin, cod liver oil, milk powder, casein, wheat germ oil and meal, cholesterin, glycerin monostearate and yeast may additionally be included. The product preferably contains 20-35% nitrogen compounds, 8-25% fats and 25-45% saccharides. An example is described.
