[Also in Group XXXV] A cycling switch in which the on/off ratio (used to adjust fuel and air supply to a boiler, see Group XXXV) depends on steam pressure and steam flow is shown in Fig. 2, in which steam pressure acts on a bellows 34 and so on a beam 35 pivoted at 36 against the action of spring 37, and steam flow determines the position of a lever 47 pivoted at 48 through the action of a cam 49 on a conventional flow-meter shaft. Pivots 39, 46 on the beam 35 and lever 47 respectively therefore set the mean position of a lever 40 in accordance with the pressure and flow, and a cam 44 on the shaft of a constantspeed motor 45 superimposes an oscillatory motion on this mean position through the action of lever 43 pivoted to 47 at 46 and to 40 at 42. A tilting mercury switch 41 thus closes for periods of time dependent on boiler demandi.e. increasing with low pressure and/or high flow. For water-heater control, temperatures may be converted into pressures by a temperature sensing bulb (mercury or gas).
