Abstract
865,457. Fluid-pressure servomotor control systems; valves. HUBBELL CORPORATION. Aug. 13, 1957 [Aug. 23, 1956], No. 25570/57. Class 135. [Also in Group XIII] Part of refrigerating system, Fig. 1, comprises a tank 11 in which is fitted an evaporator 14, 15, 16 over which liquid, e.g. milk, to be cooled, is sprayed from header 21 and is subsequently discharged through outlet 24. Refrigerant is supplied via a solenoid-operated valve 26 to an accumulator 25 from which it passes through an oil separator 28 to the evaporator and is received back in the accumulator as a gas through pipe 34, and then flows from the accumulator through a suction line 35 containing a filter 78 and a backpressure regulating valve 36 to the inlet of a compressor. The opening of valve 36 is controlled by a pilot valve 80 according to pressure in the suction line anterior of the valve and according to the temperature at any desired point in the refrigeration system, e.g. the temperature of cooled liquid after passing over the evaporator detected by a thermal element 154. The pilot valve, Fig. 3, comprises an inlet 82 leading from the suction line 35 to the lower side of a diaphragm 94 which is urged by an adjustable spring 101 towards a seating 118 for controlling the flow of fluid through an outlet 83 to the actuator of the regulating valve 36, and a diaphragm 132 contained in a housing 127 screwed to the bottom of the valve housing 81 and having its lower face subjected to the pressure generated in the thermal element 154 and its upper face to the suction line pressure through bores 142 containing rods 140 for transmitting movement of the diaphragm 132 to the diaphragm 94, so that the suction pressure alone operates the valve until the thermally-generated pressure acting on the underside of the diaphragm 132 is sufficient to override the suction pressure acting on its upper side and also control the valve. Alternative lower diaphragm 132 may be fitted to alter the response of the valve.
