Abstract

865,442. Pit props. MASCHINENFABRIK E. BELLMANN G.m.b.H. June 28, 1957, No. 20414/57. Class 20(2) A telescopic pit prop comprises an inner top part 2 supported by a fluid cushion 4 on a conical member 3a which is adapted to move longitudinally of the prop and press wedges 36 radially outwardly against the interior of the outer prop part 1. The prop is released by supplying fluid by means of an aperture 10a in the prop part 2 to force down a piston 6, open a valve 5 and release fluid from the cushion chamber 4a to the interior of the prop part 2 whereupon the inner prop part 2 falls and the lower edge of the cushion chamber 4a engages and releases the wedges 3b, and the prop collapses. To set the prop, fluid is first supplied by an aperture 7a into the inner prop part 2 to force fluid back into the cushion chamber 4a through the valve 5. Fluid is then supplied by means of an aperture 11a in the prop part 1 to raise a piston 9 which engages a bolt 8 on the member 3a to hold the cone and wedges released and then to raise them and the inner prop part 2 until the head 10 engages the mine roof, the pressure of which operates the cone and wedges through the prop part 2 and cushion 4 to lock the prop.
