Abstract

Zinc phosphate and/or borophosphate and/or a mixture of substances which produces zinc phosphate and/or borophosphate on heating are incorporated in a carbon or graphite article. The resulting article is thereafter heated preferably in a non-oxidising atmosphere so as to produce an oxidation-resistant protective coating of molten zinc phosphate or borophosphate. On sufficient heating, e.g. to 800-900 DEG C., a glass is formed. The article may contain 4-10% of glass. The mixture of substances may be zinc chloride and one or more of di-ammonium hydrogen phosphate, phosphoric acid, and borophosphoric acid, optionally together with boric acid. Diammonium hydrogen phosphate, zinc chloride, and boric acid may be used in a ratio of between 4:1:0 and 2:2:0.25, preferably 3:1:0.25. The glass-producing material may be incorporated in a carbon mix which is thereafter heated to form the carbon or graphite article, or a preformed article may be impregnated with a 1.5% aqueous hydrochloric acid solution containing 20-45% of glass-producing material and optionally 0.1% of a wetting agent. Impregnation may be effected under pressure, and may be repeated one or more times. The impregnated article may be dried at room temperature to 110 DEG C.
