Abstract

864,115. Building tyres. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. Aug. 23, 1957 [Sept. 5, 1956], No. 27099/56. Class 144 (1). The ply ends 15a of a tyre-ply pocket 15 supported on a building former 1 are turned around the bead cores 6 and stitched down on the former to overlap in the tread region, by means of a resilient extensible annulus 13 of circular cross-section rollably carried coaxially at each end of the former on the radially outer ends 12 of a series of arms 11 which are pivoted to a support 9 movable axially with respect to the former, the annulus 13 contacting the former end face on such axial movement and being guided radially outwardly thereby to contact the ply end and turn it around the bead core 6, whereupon a sleeve member 14 is moved coaxially towards and over the former 1 to engage the ply end 15a on the radially outermost portion of the annulus thereby to roll the annulus 13 off its supporting-arms 11 on to the former to complete the ply turn-over and stitching. As shown, the former 1 has a cylindrical building surface 2 with end recesses 5 to receive the bead cores 6, the former being rotatably mounted on a shaft 7. The arms 11 at each end of the former are pivoted to a radial support 10 carried on a cylinder 9 which co-operates with a piston 8 fixed to the shaft 7, axial movement of the cylinder on its piston being effected by fluid pressure. The sleeves 14 are shown tapered, with their wide end adjacent the former 1, but may be of cylindrical form of rigid or hard rubber material, and may be of closed or lattice surface structure. Each annulus 13 is carried in concave pockets 12 at the ends of the arms 11 and may be of solid or hollow section formed from rubber, or a closely-wound helical steel spring which may be sheathed in a textile or other elastic covering. In an alternative arrangement, the former may be of crowned profile, the sleeves 14 having conforming interior surfaces associated with power-driven belts which effect the rolling of the annuli over the former surface.
