863,964. Cooling electric motors. AMERICAN RADIATOR & STANDARD SANITARY CORPORATION. Aug. 18, 1959 [Aug. 18, 1958], No. 28215/59. Class 35. In a refrigeration system similar to that described in Specification 863,955 the electric motor is cooled by liquid refrigerant injected into the air-gap between the stator and rotor. In the form shown, refrigerant from reservoir 50 is injected into the air-gap by nozzles on an annular distributer ring 46 and is returned to the condenser 54 by an impeller 71 on the back of the main compressor impeller 30. Both stator and rotor may be axially grooved to facilitate the passage of the refrigerant. In a modification, refrigerant is admitted to the motor through manually adjustable expansion valves at each end of the motor casing, and is drawn off midway along the motor body to a low-pressure point in the refrigeration system.
