Abstract

The invention comprises dyes of formula: <FORM:0863861/IV(c)/1> where A is a benzene radical which may contain non-salt forming substituents, B is the residue of a coupling component with OH #s to the azo link which may also contain non-salt forming substituents, X is OH or COOH #s to the azo link, or a substituent which is converted into such a group during metallization, and R is an aliphatic or aromatic residue which may contain nonionic substituents and their 1, 2-chromium, -cobalt, -nickel and -iron complexes. Non-salt forming substituents indicated for A and B are halogen, alkyl, alkoxy, aryloxy, nitro, acylamino, alkyl-sulphonyl, aryl-sulphonyl, sulphon-dialkyl-amide, sulphonic acid aryl ester and carboxylic acid ester and amide groups. The dyes are made by conventional metallization, diazotization and coupling processes. Representative of specified diazo components are 2- aminophenol-4-sulphonic acid-N-dihydroxypropyl-methylamide, 2-amino-1-carboxybenzene-4-sulphoni acid-N-dihydroxypropyl-ethylamide, 2-amino-4, 6-dichloro- and -dinitro-1-phenols and 4-nitro-2-aminoanisole. Indicated as coupling components are phenols, napthols, acylacetic acid arylamides and 5-pyrazolones. The metal complexes may be derived from a mixture of dyes of the above formula or of one of such dyes with another metallizable #s, #s1 dihydroxy or #s-hydroxy-#s1-carboxy mono-azo-dye, free from sulphonic acid groups. The metal complexes dye protein substances such as leather, hair, wool, silk, casein and superpoly-amide and -urethane fibres from neutral or weakly acid dye baths. Examples are provided of the preparation of the dyes and the use of the metal complexes in dyeing wool in a variety of colours. The Provisional Specification relates to dyes of formula : <FORM:0863861/IV(c)/2> where A, B and X are as above, R and R1 are aliphatic hydrocarbon radicals of up to 3 carbon atoms and n is 1 or 2 and their metal complexes. Specifications 706,370, 746,944, 806,678 and 811,521 are referred to.
