Abstract

Alkanes having 4 to 7 carbon atoms are isomerised to more highly branched chains by passage over a catalyst containing rhodium, iridium, ruthenium or osmium and at least 2% of a compound of boron, preferably the oxide, supported on an inorganic carrier e.g. alumina, silica, magnesia, zirconia, thoria or gallia (see Group III). Conditions may be 100-1000 DEG F., 0,1-20 WHSV, hydrogen added in an amount of 200-10,000 SCF/B of feed in a molar ratio to hydrocarbon between 0,1 and 10:1, and a total pressure of 0-1,000 p.s.i.g. The process is particularly suitable for isomerising n-pentane and/or n-hexane or for upgrading light naphtha.ALSO:Hydrocarbon isomerisation catalysts comprise an inorganic carrier, a metal selected from osmium, iridium, ruthenium and rhodium and at least 2% of a compound of boron, e.g. boron oxide. Boron oxide may be present in amounts of 5-30% and the metal in amounts of 0.01-10% on supports such as alumina, silica, magnesia, zirconia, thoria or gallia or combinations thereof, acid-treated silica-alumina clays or hydrogen fluoride treated alumina or silica-alumina. The support is impregnated with a water-soluble salt of the metal, which may be sulphided or may contain an inorganic or organic, preferably volatile, activator, and then dried and the mass, before or after calcination or treatment with hydrogen, is further impregnated with boric acid or composited with boron oxide and calcined at 600-1200 DEG F. for 2-6 hours. Regeneration is effected by oxidation first at 500-900 DEG F., with a gas containing 0.1-3% oxygen and gradually increasing the oxygen content and the temperature to 1,000 DEG F.
