Abstract

863,574. Starch derivatives. MEIJER'S FABRIEKEN VOOR VERPAKTE ARTIKELEN N. V., O. J. March 29, 1957 [Oct. 3, 1956], No. 10422/57. Class 2(2). Starch derivatives capable of swelling and/or dissolving in cold water are made from a starting material which comprises a starch derivative as hereinafter defined or a starch and a substance capable of converting the starch into one of said derivatives and in which the original starch granules are microscopically recognisable, by increasing the particle size of the starting material in the presence of moisture by shear action in a single stage at a linear pressure of 100 to 10,000 kg./cm. and at a temperature below the gelatinization point of the starting material. The term "starch derivative" means a product obtained by acid treatment in suspension, oxidation, e.g. with hypochlorites, peroxides or persalts, etherification, esterification e.g. with monochloracetic acid or dextrinization to give products which do not dissolve or swell in cold water. An edge runner mill, with either a stationary or rotatable tray, is a suitable apparatus. By subsequent sieving and grinding the desired particle size can be selected. The viscosity of the product can be increased by adding alkali lye, borax or other alkaline agents before or during the process.
