1,146,888. Hydrodynamic coupling. ECLIPSE CONSULTANTS Ltd. 1 Nov., 1966 [26 Nov.. 1965; 21 Dec., 1965], No. 48935/66. Heading F2C. In a hydrodynamic coupling wherein vaned impeller and turbine elements 10, 12 form a working circuit 15 and a reservoir 25 rotatable with the turbine 12 receives liquid through holes 31 from the working circuit during overload to reduce the coupling capacity, guide-plates 32 between adjacent vanes 16 of the turbine 12 direct the liquid towards the holes 31 and deflectors 30. The guide-plates 32 may be provided only between those vanes which contain a hole 31 or may be provided between all the vanes 16. Additional guide-plates 37 may be provided between the impeller vanes. The guide-plates 32 are shaped so that they do not interfere with the liquid vortices 34 formed in the radially outer part of the coupling during normal operation. A vent tube 39 passes through and rotates with the impeller 10. The tube 39 opens into a region 38 of the coupling which is not occupied by either the normal or overload vortices and a valve 40 in the other end of the tube is opened centrifugally when the impeller speed is above a predetermined value. Cooling fins 17 are provided. In Fig. 5 (not shown) the reservoir is adjustable to vary its capacity.
