Abstract

An intumescent fire-retardant lacquer comprises a condensate of urea, a phenol and formaldehyde, dissolved in methanol or ethanol, and an alkanol soluble ammonium- or aminoamino-organophosphorus compound. Suitable phosphorus compounds are the products obtained by neutralizing, partially or completely, with ammonia or with a lower alkyl amine, mixtures of mono- and di-butyl phosphates containing some free orthophosphoric acid. They may be formed in situ. The compositions may include fillers or pigments, e.g. rutile, anatase, asbestine, mica, vermiculite and/or antimony oxide, or plasticizers, e.g. glyceryl-a -tolyl ether or glyceryl di-tolyl ether. A water-resistant, water insoluble film-forming resin may be included as a further addition. If desired, the alcohol solvent may be used with an aromatic hydrocarbon, e.g. xylene. In examples, the compositions contain (I) urea, phenol, paraformaldehyde, ethanol, mono- and di-butyl phosphoric acid, ammonia, glyceryl-a -tolyl ether and p-chloro-m-xylenol. (II) Butylated U/F syrup in butanol/xylol, mono- and di-butyl phosphoric acid, monomethylamine, ethanol, p-chloro-m-xylenol, glycerol-a -tolyl ether and if desired tris-b -chloro-ethyl phosphate.
