In worm gearing particularly for vehicle back axles lateral movement of the worm-wheel 2 is prevented by adjustable metal pads 4 bearing against the flat faces of the wheel rim. As shown, each pad 4 is supported on the rounded heads of two threaded stems 6 adjustable in a fixed housing 3. Each pad 4, Fig. 3, has a central flat bearing-surface with chamfered ends to admit lubricant. During assembly the pad is held against the stems by wire passing through holes 10. The pads are preferably adjusted to give running clearance under no load conditions. The housing 3 may also contain a differential gear whose planet wheels are carried by the worm-wheel 2.
