Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:0861418/IV (b)/1> and a process for their preparation by condensing b ,b -dimethyl-styrene of the formula <FORM:0861418/IV (b)/2> with a diazo-acetic acid ester N2CHCOOR, where R represents an alkyl group, at an elevated temperature and saponifying the ester so produced. In an example b ,b -dimethyl-styrene is condensed with ethyl diazo-acetate at 125 DEG C. in the presence of anhydrous copper sulphate and the resulting ester saponified in the cold using aqueous alcoholic sodium hydroxide followed by hydrochloric acid. The acid product is a mixture of cis and trans isomers.
