Abstract

860,678. Impact wrenches. RAVDELL, M., RAVDELL, M., and STANTON, L. M. May 28, 1957, No. 16905/57. Class 61. In an impact wrench provided with a shaft 10 rotatable in a housing 22 and having a socket spanner adapter 19 and head 34 detachably secured to one end of the shaft and a stabilising bar 20 and holder 21 detachably secured to the' other end, blows are delivered to radial abutment surfaces 28 of cam-like projections on the shaft by swinging movement of a transverse handle 25 weighted at the outer end and attached to a hollow boss 24 on the housing. The impact transmitting member comprises a pawl 30 mounted in the boss 24 and urged by a spring 31 towards the centre of the shaft 10, the steeply sloping abutment faces 28 on the shaft being engaged by the flat face 32 of the pawl. The pawl has edge contact and normally rides on one of the gently rising curved surfaces 29 which extend from the base of one face 28 to the top of the adjoining face. The wrench may be used as an ordinary ratchet wrench by swinging back the handle through an angle sufficient to cause the pawl to ride over the edge of the sloping surface 29 with which it happens to be in contact and to drop into engagement with the next shoulder 28.
