860,572. Hydraulic apparatus. SWINDON TOOL CO. Ltd. Nov. 23, 1959 [Aug. 21, 1958], No. 26936/58. Class 69 (2). Apparatus for filling or replenishing hydraulic equipment, such as railway buffers, comprises a piston 2 which is disposed within a cylinder 1 and has an aperture 3 to permit the flow of fluid from its upper to its lower side under the control of a manually - actuated, spring-opposed valve 6, and a valve 14 controlling an outlet orifice 13 in the base of the cylinder connectable to the equipment, the orifice being opened under the influence of hydraulic pressure on the underside of the piston upon closure of the aperture 3 to admit fluid to the equipment. When the piston is in its lower position, the space above the piston is filled with fluid through a closable orifice in the end cover 8 of the cylinder. The piston is then pulled upwardly by a handle 7, the valve 6 automatically opening to permit the fluid above the piston to pass through the aperture 3 into the space below the piston and the valve 14 closing to prevent fluid in the equipment passing into the cylinder. When the handle is released, a spring 9 closes the valve 6 and applies pressure to the piston to pressurize the fluid in the cylinder, the valve 14 opening so that the fluid can pass into the equipment as required.
