In a lathe &c. tool, the tip 2 is secured in a recess 1a in the shank 1 by material cast around the tip, the material having a greater density in the fluid state than in the solid state, so that on solidifying it expands and grips the tip. The cast material may be bismuth or an alloy of bismuth.
