[Also in Group XIII] Gases from a combustion chamber 3 pass, from an opening 24 through a bell-shaped water jacket 4 forming the chamber, over the tops of two short walls 27 extending radially, at either side of the opening 24, between the belljacket 4 and a surrounding jacket 7, to enter an annular flue 11 between the jackets before passing to a flue outlet 30 extending through the boiler insulation jacket 10. At least one baffle 28 is located in the flue 11 at each side of the opening 24 and is provided with a line of apertures and a similarly apertured hit-or-miss shutter movable so as to allow the gases to flow through the apertures on first heating-up. Such a baffle and shutter are described in Specification 35910/57. The baffles 28 shown have gaps 29 beneath so that the gases flow through these and change direction. There may be other baffles so that the gases flow through a number of up and down courses. The combustion chamber 3 may be fired with solid fuel supplied with air from beneath the grate and simultaneously or alternatively it may be fired with oil from a nozzle 14 at the end of an oil pipe 13 in an air supply pipe 12. The oil may be introduced from below into the chamber 3. The water heated in the jackets 4, 7 passes to radiators through an outlet 23 and returns to an inlet 22. It also passes to a jacket 15 surrounding the air pipe 12 and passes back through tubes 18 to heat a separate body of water in a chamber 2 having an inlet 16 and an outlet 17 for a draw-off supply.
